FRIENDSHIP AND MONEY: OIL AND WATER- MARIO PUZO.

“Lend money to an enemy, and thou will gain him, to a friend and thou will lose him” Benjamin Franklin
“Honest is an expensive gift, don’t expect it from cheap people”
“Lending money to a friend, you lose both the friend and money”

Ever wondered why when you Google friendship and money all the searches just come out with negativity? Whatever happened to a friend in need is a friend in deed? Why don’t the two mix?

I believe we have all in a life time been in a position of either the recipient or the giver.

We have one time asked for material support from our friends once in a while, but there are those annoying things I wish both parties should avoid. The list is endless but I will name just a few:

1.       If am to lend you money and we agree on such a date, kindly don’t wait for me to call you by then agreed date if you haven’t paid, be courteous enough to call in advance if there any changes.

2.       Let me sleep on it should not be a whole week, are you snow white? It is a yes or no and we move on don’t keep the other party in suspense if you are not willing to lend them.

3.       When you borrow my car, if you can’t fill it up be kind enough to return it with the fuel gauge you left it on, don’t bring it on empty tank unless you found it that way and no scratches please.

4.       This is for fundi friends- If I refer you to work somewhere kindly deliver do not spoil my relationship with the other parties. Or worse still if I decide to promote your business by hiring your services don’t let me regret my decision. Maintain the highest standard of professionalism while dealing with me.

5.       Lending me more money when you still owe me is a NO NO. I refuse to entertain selective amnesia.

6.       God loves a cheerful giver and so do I. Be a blessing to your friends do not look down on anyone you help, you never know when the tables will turn, and the character should be higher than the collateral.

7.       When you help someone do not go announcing at the pulpit of your good deeds you are embarrassing your friends. Let not the right hand see what the left hand has given and your God who see things which are done in silence will reward you. Unless of course they start playing cat and mouse with you it’s when you can alert others not to fall in the same trap- buyer beware style *wink wink.

8.       Do not feel bad when a “wealthy” friend can’t come in aid on some occasions, it may not be that they are selfish, they might also be in need. You may be chasing a few thousands while they are chasing a few millions or billions you both lack on different lanes.

It is good to help one another and build one another- that is true friendship. On the other hand, let us not take advantage of each other’s kindness. It is good when friends live together as brothers and as they say money is good yet it’s the source of all evil. Let not money put us asunder.

Ps…  You can add up to the list

With Love,
The WOMAN in me.
